The MiCoach Program is a youth mentorship program aimed at preventing urban youth violence by having role models in the East Oakland Latinx community. These role models, or MiCoach Mentors are local high school seniors and juniors who help run our Better Together Soccer Program as they mentor young elementary and middle school aged kids in the community.
Overall, this program not only teaches leadership among local high school students, but also provides role models for elementary and middle school youth that participate in our programs.
Goals:
MiCoach aims to create young leaders who are committed to giving back to their communities, driven to go to college, and determined to serve as role models to younger students. This program is centered around developing our high school mentors, and preparing them for life after graduating high school.
While simultaneously creating young high school leaders, the MiCoach program will also work to expose elementary youth to older peers from their communities who are working to get into college. The youth immensely benefits from this experience as they will be encouraged to push themselves in practices and in the classroom by their older MiCoach mentors.
Specifics of the Program:
- 9 month program starting mid-October until early June
- Attend two practices a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8pm.
- Attend monthly workshops on different fields like medicine, activism, going to college, and more!
- Support the head coach in organizing soccer tournaments.
